The story begins in the late 1960s when two men, Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong met in Vancouver, Canada. Both men were involved in the world of comedy and were performing at local nightclubs. Cheech was an American who had recently moved to Vancouver while Tommy was a Canadian-born comedian.
In 1971, Cheech and Chong moved to Los Angeles together to seek greater opportunities in comedy. They quickly gained popularity through their stand-up acts, eventually leading to their own TV show called “Cheech & Chong’s Comedy Hour.” During this time, they released a series of albums that brought them nationwide acclaim.
In the early 1980s, Cheech left the group to pursue his acting career, but Tommy continued on as part of ‘Cheech & Chong’. Meanwhile, Cheech began designing products related to his unique brand of comedy. He soon realized that there was an opportunity to create products that appealed specifically to smokers.
In response, he launched a line of rolling papers called “Cheech & Chong Papers”. In collaboration with Zig Zag (one of the oldest rolling paper companies) they produced papers made from natural ingredients like rice and flaxseed. The new product line proved overwhelmingly popular among smokers due to its association with the duo's hilarious movies about marijuana use such as 'Up In Smoke'.
