History of Rolling Papers

Rolling papers, commonly known as ‘rolling joints’ is one of the indispensable elements in the world of smoking. This thin paper has become an iconic symbol for smokers worldwide due to its significance.

The history of rolling papers dates back to ancient times when people would typically smoke various kinds of herbs and plants using a bundle of leaves or special pipes. A few archaeological discoveries suggest that different cultures like the Aztecs and Native Americans had diverse methods to smoke their medicinal plants using wrappers made from bark or palm leaves.

But what gave birth to modern-day papers was the introduction of cigarettes in Europe during the early 16th century. Spain was among the first countries to import tobacco from America around this time, which later spread across Europe, making way for commercial brands selling cigarettes.

However, with increased cigarette production came problems- cigarette manufacturers began facing losses because they sold loose tobacco that customers often smoked rolled up in newspapers since most were relatively poor and couldn't afford pre-rolled cigarettes.

This led to France's Lacroix company's invention – papier à rouler (rolling paper) in 1736, which became popular among workers who preferred loose tobacco than pre-packed ones. The company named these rolling papers "Job" as it targeted manual labourers - still going strong today and enjoyed by millions of people throughout France who call them raw hemp rolls: papiers à rouler Job OCB.

Rolling papers finally made their way over to America towards the late 19th century through immigrants who brought new styles and sizes such as longer slims or flavored options like cherry or menthol flavors - which continue proving exceptionally popular till today!

In 1930s Hollywood films used “Cigarillo” sized rolling papers markers rolled tight brown smokes stand-ins since real cigarettes looked unrealistic on camera due intense lighting expediting its proliferation into pop culture globally alongside pot smoking celebrities have continued to shape opinion around it putting even more wind under ’rolling paper sales' sails!

While traditional wooden-handled pipes are now replaced by vaping devices, rolling joints will forever be an integral part of popular culture thanks largely (although not exclusively) marijuana use that normalized any social stigmas attached after decades-long campaigns against its use pushed back making it a cool pastime embraced by many millennials -- but its history spanning centuries reflects rather humbly on our relationship with plant-based medicine & how we choose enjoy our favorite substances!
