The Oliva family has a long history in tobacco farming. In fact, they began growing tobacco in Cuba in the late 1800s. But as political tensions rose between Cuba and the U.S., the family moved to Nicaragua where they continued growing their prized crop.
In 1964, Gilberto Oliva Sr. started his own cigar manufacturing company called Tabacalera Oliva S.A. However, due to economic hardships in Nicaragua at that time, he ultimately decided to move to Spain where he could cultivate his business more easily.
Years later, Gilberto’s sons took over the family business and eventually relocated it back to Nicaragua – now an even stronger hub for premium cigar production.
The new generation also changed things up by focusing on growing high-quality tobacco themselves rather than buying from outside sources when Nicaraguan politics allowed (the early 2000s saw lots of upheaval). Part of this was choosing better land to grow on and hiring experts who specialized in soil quality improvement techniques.
These changes helped propel Oliva Cigars into mainstream popularity with unbeatable flavors which put them among producers like Padron or Cohiba.
