History of Humidors

If you are someone who enjoys cigars, you likely already know what a humidor is. For those who do not, a humidor is a container designed to store and preserve cigars at the correct humidity and temperature level to keep them fresh and flavorful for longer periods of time. But where did this idea come from?

The origins of the humidor date back to the early 19th century when cigars were starting to become more popular in Europe and America. During that time, cigar boxes were often made of wood and featured tight-fitting lids intended to protect cigars from excessive moisture levels. However, it wasn't until the late 19th century when a Frenchman by the name of Pierre Lorillard invented one of the first well-known types of humidor.

Lorillard's invention consisted primarily of an air-tight jar with controlled ventilation that allowed tobacco enthusiasts to store their cigars at ideal conditions without having them grow stale over time. Soon after Lorillard's invention became popular in America, other companies began introducing their own versions into the market.

One American company that established itself as one of the leading creators purveying quality humidors was Elie Bleininger & Co., which produced hand-crafted hard-lacquered wooden creations known for their durability and elegant aesthetics during early 1900s . Their fans included prominent personalities such as US President William Howard Taft.

The increasing popularity of cigars worldwide led existing firms including newcomers venturing into designing eye-catching cabinet style humidors rather than tiny jars or boxes— some featuring intricate wood marquetry designs or others encrusted with diamonds etc coveted by high-end customers seeking luxury goods irrespective if they smoked cigers or not! During 1950-60s large home decoration stores like M/s Asprey in UK would promote great quality cabinets claiming that these could also serve multiple purposes ranging from storage/display cases for flatware /humidified storage space required for art pieces/oddities among few options.

Today there are many varieties of humidors available on today's markets These come in all shapes and sizes - from small travel-sized options to room sized walk-in units usually used exclusively by wealthy collectors who maintain vast collections within specially designed climate-controlled rooms such as Don Santiago Cigar Museum in Dominican Republic --each serving various roles catering to everyone’s needs occupying different price points accordingly!
